Huawei just launched the P20 and P20 Pro smartphones at a special launch event held at Paris. Both handsets brings some of the best in industry camera internals with patch of artificial intelligence through ‘Leica Optics’. The Huawei P20 trio has completely made to the market as Lite version, P20 Lite was already launched few weeks back in the company’ home market. Chinese mobile maker has skipped that name P11 for the series and directly jumped to ’20’ citing major improvements over the previous editions. These handsets will succeed the three variants namely Huawei P10, P10 Plus and P10 Lite. With the launch, company has also revealed it’s new logo as well.
Commenting on the launch, Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu said that both smartphones features seamless surface to touch and highly symmetric form factor to see. Yu added about the colour of smartphones that, “nature-inspired pearlescent effects giving the phone a different colour depending on the angle it was viewed from.”
Company touted the DxOMark scores to state that, Huawei P20 has best in the industry scores beating out Samsung Galaxy S9 and Apple iPhone X. They went on to share the scores as well, which reads, overall score of 102, a photo score of 107, and a video score of 94, claiming the best camera in a smartphone ever crown. On the other hand, Huawei P20 Pro even ruled out the scores of standard variant with overall score of 109, a photo score of 114, and a video score of 98. Both P20 and P20 Pro offer 4D Predictive Focus, said to provide instant focus with motion prediction, providing nearly ‘zero shutter lag’. Handsets supports 6-axis stabilisation and 960fps super slow motion video recording and company ensured that you reach quickly to open the camera in less than 0.3 seconds. Both phones supports ‘Master AI’, a scene recognition technology capable of recognizing 500 scenes, according to Huawei.
Huawei P20 Features, Price and Availability
First one out of the two, Huawei P20 runs EMUI 8.1 based on Android Oreo 8.1 and supports dual SIMs through hybrid slot. It sports a 5.8-inch FHD+ LTPS IPS LCD display with 18:7:9 aspect ratio, a iPhone X-like notch, 2244 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and offers 80.7-percent screen to body ratio. The RGWB display (W stands for white) provides better sunlight adaption with 770 nits brightness, which is claimed to be 23-percent more brighter than Apple iPhone X display. It’s screen space is higher than Galaxy S9 and iPhone X (both of which featured same size display), thanks to smaller bezels and smaller notch design. It is powered with HiSilicon Kirin 970 octa-core CPU where four performance cores are clocked at 2.4GHz and other four efficiency cores at 1.8GHz speed. The Kirin 970 SoC is coupled with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.
The major highlight of Huawei P20 is its camera intels as it features a vertically stacked dual rear camera setup with AI patching engineered with ‘Leica optics’ featuring 20 mega-pixel (f/1.6 aperture, 27 mm) and 12 mega-pixel (f/1.8 aperture, 1/2.3″, 1.55 µm size lens, OIS). The rear camera is supported with Leica optics, 2x lossless zoom, phase detection and laser auto-focus, dual-LED dual-tone flash providing a superior low-light photography, said company. On the front panel, P20 has packed a 24.8 mega-pixel selfie shooter with f/2.0 aperture and auto-focus.
The Huawei P20 is charged up by a 3400mAh battery with fast charging support claimed to provide 75 hours of non-stop music playback time. The fingerprint sensor is mounted on the back, phone is rated IP53 for dust and water resistant. It measures 149.1 x 70.8 x 7.7 mm in terms of dimensions and weighs at 165 gram.
Huawei P20 price is EUR 649 which roughly translates into INR 51,999 and said to be available immediately in the global market. Huawei has confirmed the release of smartphone in Indian market very soon, however they did not reveal about price of phone in India as of now. It is available in Pink Gold, Graphite Black, Twilight and Midnight Blue hues.
Huawei P20 Pro Features, Price and Availability
The second phone out of two, Huawei P20 Pro sports a 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED FullView display with 18:7:9 aspect ratio, 1080 x 2244 resolution, a notch and 81.9-percent screen to body ratio. It’s display is touted to have 1:1,000,000 contrast ratio, 408 ppi density and a 105 percent colour gamut. It is IP67 rated for water and dust resistance. It is powered by Kirin 970 octa-core processor (4 x 2.4GHz, 4 x 1.8GHz) paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage.
The major highlight of the launch event happens to be packing of triple camera on Huawei P20 Pro. The triple camera setup has two vertically placed cameras and single camera lens is placed just below the duo, making the count to three. Out of three camera lenses at back, the top most features 8 megapixel image sensor with f/2.4 aperture and 3x optical zoom thanks to its Leica telephoto lens, second lens features a 40 mega-pixel image sensor (f/1.8 aperture, 1/1.7-inch, OIS) and third one packs 20 mega-pixel monochrome sensor with f/1.6 aperture. The triple rear camera supports AI features through ‘Leica optics’ as a laser transmitter is placed between the dual lenses for quick auto-focus. Triple camera have the best zoom capabilities in any smartphone ever, as claimed by the company. P20 Pro offers 3x optical zoom along with 5x lossless hybrid zoom, and 10x digital zoom.
Triple rear camera is accompanied by a 24 mega-pixel selfie shooter on the front as well with f/2.0 aperture. It packs a 4000mAh capacity battery supported with Huawei’s SuperCharge fast charging, which is claimed to fill 58-percent battery juice in time period of 30 minutes. Huawei P20 Pro runs Oreo 8.1 based EMUI 8.1 on the top and supports Dual SIMs through hybrid slot. Just like the P20, it also house fingerprint sensor on the rear panel. It measures 155 x 73.9 x 7.8 mm and weighted at 180 gram.
The Huawei P20 Pro price is EUR 899 which roughly translates into Rs.71,900. It is said to be available globally in two or three days. India launch is also confirmed by the company although they did not reveal pricing details in the country. Just like the above it is also available in shades of Twilight, Black, Midnight Blue and Pink Gold.
