LG uses in-house innovations in designing such a display without compromising on brightness and at the same time offering largest 8K resolution. Earlier, LCD panels faced problem on maintaining high brightness and high resolution at the same time, more brightness here consumed more power. To combat the issue, LG took it to design OLED display. OLED display do not need backlight units, hence, made slimmer. Announcing the 8K OLED display LG said;
“The 33 million self-emissive OLED pixels in each 8K OLED display create the more delicate images and unmatched picture quality.”
Commenting on the recent development, In-Byung Kang, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at LG Display said;
“The successful development of the world’s first 8K OLED display is a milestone for the 8K era and underscores the exciting potential of OLED. OLED is clearly a next-generation technology leader and for this reason, LG Display is accelerating its research and development into OLED so that we can provide differentiated products to customers and markets.”
Please make a note that it is just a panel and actual prototype will be showcased at CES 2018 to be held at Las Vegas. Other than screen size and resolution, no other information is available regarding the display. When we will see such a display in an actual TV is yet to be known.
Since, there is no content available of 8K resolution except of few handful Youtube videos, we can’t expect 8K OLED displays into any commercial product very soon.
