Nokia Asha series phones might make a comeback as HMD Global trademarks Asha

HMD Global recently filed trademark for ‘Asha’ at European Union Intellectual Property Office. Looks like that Nokia is trying to bring its former feature phone series back in the market. Some users migh not recall that, Nokia Asha-series feature phones brought access of Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp to feature phones and most of the times offered a touchscreen as well.

Nokia Asha-series phones often offered smartphone-like features in the time when smartphones were priced way too high. However, things do not turn up well for Nokia in coming years. After the successful comeback in 2016, company has sat its strong foot-stands by the year 2017 and more such steps of solidifying the position will be seen in 2018.

There is no news whether Nokia along with HMD Global will use Asha-series for feature phone line up again or they will re-brand the Asha-series to the smartphone segment. For one, the new application specifically mentions that ‘Asha’ can be used for smartphones. If that comes true then these phone will feature Android Go based on Oreo 8.1 operating system.

Google along with Indian mobile manufacturer like Micromax, Karbonn, Intex is already working on to bring Android Go based smartphones under Rs.2,000 and expected to release them by the Republic Day of India. Apart from these, a rumor claimed that Nokia 1 android Go based smartphone might release in March, 2018.

The recent development will actually bring more very low priced Nokia smartphones in market like India under the Asha-series.
