Hi I have been planning to buy a smart phone for a long time and My ideal phone was Samsung Galaxy SII but due its high cost its out of my budget, but I would love to have a phone with almost same features but within 15K, that is rubbish its not possible….
After a lot of research reading about all the aspects, hardware configuration, Android OS version, GPU effects, Screen size, camera configuration. I wondered why there cant be a single set from every manufacture which could satisfy every mentioned quality to be present in that set and that should be the ultimate in its segment, then i wondered if that set is launched in the market within a range of 20K then every other set will not be sold.

So 1st thing prioritize what you want from your phone and believe me if you want it within your budget YOU would have to SACRIFICE/COMPROMISE with some less graded other features.

    PROS:
    1. Screen Size 4″, looks good in hand.
    2. OS Android v4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) most probably up-gradable to Android v4 (Jelly Beans)[butter project of Google, to improve the graphics, include google voice search, google maps of cities can be downloaded, Unlock screen will be changed etc]
    3. Processor is fine and so is the User interface(Timescape)
    4. Scratch resistant screen and Sony Bravia engine.
    5. Within Range under 16500rs
    6. Camera for still photographs is good, with LED flash
    7. Secondary camera(VGA) for video call over VOIP, internet.
    8. Battery is 1700mAh… provides better battery backup.

    CONS:
    1. GPU (graphical processing unit) is ADRENO 200, this atleast could have been ADRENO220, if not MALI400MP
GPU-> helps in playing heavy games, HD games, higher the GPU lesser is load on processor and RAM.
    2. RAM 512 idealy should have been 1GB, but then it would have become an IDEAL phone.
    3. Video recording is not HD video, for me its not imp aspect i don’t make that much videos but i guess VGA videos are not that bad.
    4. Internal memory is fine as you can buy an external memory card and ICS allows user to save and run applications from memory card.

I have decide to buy this phone but it is not available in retail stores.

    This is a good buy.

U can buy it in cheap prices from other sites but they won’t be giving Manufacturer’s Warranty, they will give you Dealer’s warranty.Google about this you will understand.

When my BlackBerry went into the washing machine with my trouser I desperately needed a phone, Smartphone (with atleast 4 inch screen) I should say. Budget: 18000-22000, if can find a good one budget was extendable. Truly speaking there NO good all-in-one phone in the market at present.

Started with Nokia 820: Lost in first phase, OVERPRICED, boring OS, utterly disappointing Camera quality, though it was blazing fast performer.

Samsung Galaxy S advance: Was very impressed. Overall, the best phone in market with price range 19000-20000. But Gingerbread, deeper position of Screen and quite an old phone.

HTC Desire X: Low on specs but priced almost similar to Galaxy S advance, no front cam- not VFM.

Sony Xperia J: Quite a Looker, Crisp screen, very low on specs but my heart was saying go for it, my mind was telling No.

Samsung Grand Duos: I hate dual sim. But it’s specs almost killed me and solidly built too. But looking at the HUGE screen: The oomph, the zing is missing. It’s screen, however big it may be, has NO LIFE and was telling me “I am a ‘cheap’ phone.

All of a sudden went to store- bought Xperia J. I knew its cons, some how those failed to resist me.

    Review:

    Look at the phone: wow.
Look at the screen: wow!!! crisp, pixels hardly noticeable.
Build quality: Good feelings on hand grip, but surly not precisely built: All-plastic cheap feelings on closer inspection.
Camera: Good one. But not excellent. Reviews says distance photos a bad, macros are good. True, until you set the focus manually to infinity. After that, camera does perfect job.
Sound: Pretty nice on supplied headphones. Excellent on Sony MDR-EX100LP.
Performance: 1 Ghz single core Adreno Enhanced 200 does the day-to-day job. It never lagged or hanged even after installing 37 apps. RAM is enough. Don’t know why people keep complaining about hanging problems, probably they don’t close the previously used apps properly.
Keyboard: Very nice and easy to use.
Interface: Very smooth and smart interface. Looks exceptionally good and noway boring.
Battery: Fair enough for 1.5 days. With Data connection off it lasts even upto 3 days with 45 mins of talking every day.

    Where it lacks:
It lags when you simultaneously keep 4-5 apps open.
It heats up on playing Temple Run and when you use maps or downloads something over net.
It become unresponsive when you connect it to laptop via USB (installing PC companion s/w helps enough though to cure this problem), no such issue on wall charging.
    Front cam pretty bad.
Takes a bit time to open heavy apps and 3 seconds to open camera.
No ambient sensor a big disappointment.
Multi-tasking is a pain. If you listen to music and try to do other things, the sounds get distorted- the processor shows lack of power.
Hand writing recognition only on Chinese keyboard input method.
A bit overpriced compared to the other phones with similar specs. But still it stands apart.

But, overall a very descent package on such a price. If you are not a heavy gamer, it’s a ideal stylish and competent android phone.

UPDATE: on 8/03/2013 i got 4.1.2 JELLY BEAN. I was apprehensive before upgrading whether this phone can handle JB. But the true fact is that, now multi-tasking is a lot easier. No more distorted sound or lag on multi-tasking. The UI have become buttery smooth. Notification toogle and Google Now have been added. Became a bit faster too.

UPDATE on 8/06/2014: The phone has become soooo slow that I often wish to throw it through my window. Unusable… completely. 🙁

    Hey guys
Xperia j is is an awesome phone in its price range. I won’t mention the specifications again . The phone gives a very good experience of ICS and timescape interface of Sony.

Firstly the the phone is very high on looks specially the white colour. You can also get Samsung S duos for same price but S dous won’t match its looks.
If you are a big music listener, the this phone was built for you! Its speakers are great. They come with Sony’s X loud enhancement and are loud enough. Even at high volume level their is no sound distortion. The phone comes with Walkman music player with a very nice interface.
Gaming experience is also good. You can play all the classics like Angry bird, Temple run etc. Graphics are good. If you want a pro gaming experience you can buy Xperia U which is cheaper than Xperia J but has a small screen and has low volume.
Camera is also fine. Though it is not that good as compared to a digital camera but it is fine.
Battery is also good. No need to charge twice a day as in most of the Android phones. You can use it for multimedia purposes all day.
Its screen is amazing. Pixels are not visible . Video playback is good though it cannot play HD Videos. If you wan’t HD Videos playback then you can check out Xperia Neo l which is around rs. 18000.
Overall this phone is a great product from Sony. If you wan’t a great phone in this price range then go for it. You can also check out Samsung Galaxy S Duos, HTC one V, Nokia 710 and I phone 3g.

first thumbs up for the flipkart for delivering the product on just the third day… so u all r doing a grt job.. keep it up.
now about the xperia j… well for the last 2 months i was researching for a android fone within the range of 18000 and which cud justify my money spending, earlier i nvr used but i’d seen some of the android fones with pathetic battery life, here’s j catches upp on all the cons.. awesumm battery life, on very heavy use it will give a day of back up.lags a bit on hd games but games like angry bird and temple run r running smoother. fone resolution is up to the mark means very gud, luks just the perfect as u can expect this from sony, sound again no one can beat sony, their walkman app will keep ur music exp stand alone, sometimes u can find screen hiccups but nvr created any problem, ok for me, camera is again very gud, colour and visuality are sharp compared to samsung fone cameras, so if u are luking for a style statement within a range of 16k, i think no other fone can replace this, been using it for 5 days now, and i m very muchh satisfied with the xperience,

Comparing the current generation of Xperia lineup, this device stands pretty low in the performance segment. Dont expect a powerhouse with 1 Ghz Cortex A-5 and Adreno 200. For decent gaming go straight away to U/Sola/P.

Coming to Xperia J, having experienced it personally at stores, i’l surely recommend for people who need every bit of android experience to moderate levels. A spacious 4″ screen, curvy design, great image and audio clarity, dual cameras is more than enough a casual user can ever ask for. Expandable storage (32 GB) is rare add-on coming from Sony.

Battery is huge! 1700 Mah capacity is something no Thumbsup buyers! 🙂

best in segment… do buy sony xperia j looking better dan all… so undoubtly u can go for j… its a great phone well after using the SONY SL for past 3 weeks,,,i would lik to say MY VIEW ( this all of my own TESTS ) & it can vary frm others view too, depending on how they use .

This phone is GOOD for the following tat i think,,

Well in terms of Browsing its way faster ( even in 2g too)

    Multitasking went pretty good,

Gaming was fluid ( i played good graphical ones lik batman my fav , shadow guardian, 9mm, and sme few decent graphics plus high downloaded lik temple run, angry birds, agent dash,) it all worked to its best wit no glitch.( even while in middle sme txts came & resuming back the game which did good)

My earlier phone was my cute phoenix ARC(my standard using phone) & still hav ,
so i can clearly see the diff in HD resolution in clarity in SL so watching videos is at its peak very sharp i can say ,,, 720 p worked very great, were as 1020p worked good but nt all movies ( my 6gb sized inception 1020p lagged also some anime too,,a bit i mean lik the audio was skipped off, bt Bourne series bluray worked grt,) it may be due to codecs,nt sure,,, bt all 720p movies did very sweet and the colour depth compared to my frnds s3 i think SL beats up
( no offense to s3 xcept in video playing only i said, as per specs i know its quad series & much more so dnt think of comparing whole phone to it ) thAnks to Bravia engine did grt job. ( but dnt depend on default player ,as it wont support all formats ,as many would know)

    Awesome looks!

This is a must buy for someone looking for a phone in around 16-17k and with 16GB card free from Flipkart its an offer not to be missed.

    Go for it!!!

    Ankit Dubey

m using this phn for about more than a week and i will say, as in reviews on the net , it DOES NOT hang a lot..sometimes a minor lag is seen in ui bt thats acceptable not a deal broker. The phone is elegant in looks and easily handle occasional gaming like temple run ,turbo fly 3d etc quite easily. its definatly NOT MEANT FOR HD GAMES and HARD GAMERS because of a single core 512 .The processing speed is fine not as low as in reviews over the net ..though buying a dual core could save you an extra second or 2 if the world was at an end (pun intended)
one line–for a casual and not so geeky user ,the phone is simply awesome at this price.

    pros:

1 BEST- great in design overpowering the rest in segment(looks like a 22k phn)
2 illumination system is awesome (works better after installing some tweaks)
3 a good walkman branded music player in stock.(sony best in class sound quality)
24 decent battery 1700mah (no charger in pocket issue)
5 ics 4.0.4 out of the box(upgradeble to jelly bean)
6 big 4″ gorilla glass display with 245ppi produces crisp vibrant and eye pleasing display quality ( watchng videos and photos is really really amazing)
7 sonys ui is neat and pleasing to eyes with great ease of use and sophstcatn
8 got it for just 14.8k

    cons:

well cons , yes this phone does has some..you would find them easily and early after purchasing

1 the ram is just 512 mb..installing more than 25-30 apps and it starts fumbling ,easily noticable in ui until you free some ram , it cud easily be 768mb without much additional costs .Restartng the phn would solve the prob (i dint need to do that till now)
2 a slight echo problem is noticed while on cal sometimes (dont cover the phn near the camera region (i dnt kny why) on calls and you avoid that )
3 the sound in earpiece is good for indoor ,semi-indoor conditions bt for noisy conditions (ex. traffic or large crowd) the in ear volume is very low for hearing ,this wasnt expected frm sony.
4 the camera..at last , its good only if you click pictures up close (max3-4 m )after that, the pixels cn be seen if on computer, at nite , the camera quality isnt upto the mark.
5 the messaging .. in fullscreen landscape mode the qwerty keyboard woks gud , bt in portrait mode owing to a lil narrow screen , there are some typing errors, while if on the phonepad mode ,it lags a lil sometimes if typing very fast
5 video calling on skype is good,2g is supportd bt hvnt used bt no video calling on 3g supported( before considering this, just think how often or with whom wud you use video calling and keeping the data charges in mind 🙂 )

for those confused b/w J and S DUOS

50% more ram bt still it also lags
and for the notification bar and the built in task manager in s duos, you can get it all from android store trust me i have it and its way better ..samsung dissapoints with its same design for every phone be it a 3k,7k or 11k or 15k phone. The camera is better than j and produces better images bt for those who require dual sim functionality the phone is best in segment ,go for it.

for those confused b/w j nd desire one v-

j has a larger display, better looks , same config 1ghz 512mb ,better battry backup and a better ui ,
for hd recording in one v , none beats my digi cam 🙂

for confused b/w J and sola-

guys no comparson ,sola wins hands down anyday anytime with better camera ,dual core processr, mali 400 gpu,hd phn… a mobile bravia engine, 264 ppi 3.7″ screen and at a gud 1500 rs less in price
the only cons are a 1320 mah battery and a stiff camera button which can be neglected if you require that config
..go for j only if you want to hold an elegant and an eye catching phown , have a digi cam at home and prefer playing hd games on 21″ computer rather than on a 3.7″ cellphone 🙂
P.S decide in your mind, cd 100(xperia sola) or apache(xperia j) which one you would choose (cd 100 has an avg of 85 compared to apches 45 and a much stronger and durable steel body :P)

verdict – you should go for the phone only if dont require hard gaming, a SLR quality pics from a cellphn, and a lightning fast processing speed which saves nearly 2-3 mins a day from your busy schedule
other than tht . this is a mid range phone you were searching for. 🙂

I have no problem with my xperia j. Those on this comments thread complaining about it clearly do not possess the intelligence to understand it’s functions ( and I can tell this by the poor spelling and total lack of punctuation in your comments lol). I had a Sony ericsson xperia ray until November (it died on my birthday:-( which was not good) and between then and the xperia j I’ve had a Nokia lumia 610 which is without a doubt the worst, most deficient and Ill functioning phone I have ever owned. I quickly sold that on and borrowed an HTC wildfire until I could find another xperia ray. But being nearly two years old I couldn’t find one. I love Sony phones and knew that another one was all that would suffice. Sure it has no hd video on the j and the still camera isn’t as good as the ray but being as now it’s getting harder to find newer smart phones with sd support it’s a small price to pay. I am very happy with my xperia j, and given time i’ll love it just like I did my ray. What it lacks when compared to my Sony Ericsson xperia ray it more than makes up for with functions that were not on the xperia ray. I would definitely recommend this phone to other. Only one problem their is a camera quality is a not good.

As always, delivered in < 48 hours and everything is perfect. Sleek design and it might look small in picture and 4" inch is quite big 16GB mSD card + cash back of 800 Rs, what else do you need. Buying from last 2 years and no complaint at all, Keep up the good work Flipkart !!
