50 reviews for Sony Xperia SP
Note : **Some of the reviews are picked from flipkart, Amazon and other e-stores.

  1. Rated 5 out of 5

    Anish Pimpley

For about 2 yrs Sony’s hold on the mid-range market has been strong and Xperia SP makes the 20-30k range a one horse race.

Here is a concise review covering all grounds.
    Scores:(Compared with the best offerings)
Screen: 9/10 (mediocre viewing angles the rest is Splendid)
Music : 9/10 (Not too loud but great music quality)
Battery: 10/10 (Will last around 2 days under average use)
Performance*:11/10(You don’t get an 11 for being just excellent)
Browsing speed: 10/10(Beats One and S4 on many occasions)
Camera: 7.5/10 (good 8mp shooter but Don’t expect miracles)
Video recording :10/10 (impressive [email protected] with HDR videos)
    UI :9.5/10(mini-apps,Not bloated,Awesome lock-screen and looks)
    Software: 9.25/10 (On 4.1.2,Will get 4.2 soon)
Looks:10/10 (Gorgeous looks and Premium Metal Body)
Aesthetics:9/10 (Comfortable, little heavy cuz of METAL body)
    ……………………………………………………….
    MORE ON PERFORMANCE*:
This phone is unbelievably fast for it’s price.
    Here are some benchmarks:

    *NOTE:for B-pi:(Lower is better)

    Phone……General speed…..Gaming………Net surfing
    …………..B-pi*…..LP……..EC……..B-mark…..Vellamo
    Xperia.SP…184……348…….58.0*……2263……2497*
    Galaxy.S3…359……175…….41.3…….1247……1641
    Galaxy.S4…132……788…….57.1…….2438……2060
    Nexus..4….431……213…….53.9…….1794……1310

    Conclusions:
Xperia SP is faster than s3 and Nexus 4 on all grounds.
Xperia SP is THE BEST GAMING DEVICE and among the best Browsing devices on market right now and a battery king.
    ………………………………………………………
This is attributed to the adreno 320 GPU that has to run on a smaller 720p screen.

If you are ready to settle for a mediocre camera (only IMAGING..recording is phenomenal), The Xperia SP is a NO-BRAINER.

To put it bluntly: THE COMPETITION DOESN’T STAND A CHANCE.

I bought this phone from a local store and have been playing with it from past 2 days. here is my short review:)

    GOOD THINGS FIRST…

    1. Screen is an absolute stunner.. so sharp and vivid.. mobile bravia engine2 is also here which does only good things enhances the viewing experience and adjusts the contrast.
    2. phone feels solid in hand.. unlike samsung galaxy devices. iconic power button is well built and well placed.. im th fan of this unlock key:)
    3. there is an ample battery on the board which easily lasts for a day.. im actually quite impressed by the battery backup:)
    4. the most appealing feature on this cell has to be see-through panel at the bottom of the phone.. im in love with this festure..
    5. camera is fairly enough for day to day shots.. thats ok for me:)

HERE ARE THE THINGS I DONT LIKE MUCH…

    1. viewing angles are limited.. though its not a deal breaker for many..
    2. fron vga camera. it could ve been better..
i would strongly recommend this phone.. its the best phone you caN get in this price range.. GO FOR IT FOLKS..ITS BETTER THAN GALAXY S3 ON ANYDAY..

With agreement for all positive reviews provided by SP users, I would like to highlight two major flaws which I haven’t seen people have highlighted in those positive reviews.
These 2 points can really make or break ones decision to buy this phone.

    1. Touch pad gives issues while your phone is connected for charging and it is very difficult to type, phone gets hang while typing, lot of delay in typing.

    2. Camera : Being a Sony phone, SP doesn’t even meet the basic expectations for the camera. Description shows it is a 8MP camera, but the max option you have to take pictures in 7 MP. Also the pictures have lot of color noise, even with highest possible resolutions. My earlier Nokia phones with 3.2 MP and 5 MP were producing great quality images than what I am getting with my new Sony Xperia SP.

Both these points are well known by now in Sony Xperia SP users and if you can search on google with problems with Sony Xperia SP phones, you will get these 2 as top 2 issues. No solution/update/upgrade offered yet by Sony and SP users are desperately waiting for the update from sony.

If you are ready to ignore these 2 problems, this is an excellent phone. 🙂

    *** I am writing this after a month’s use ***

I’ll write about how Xperia SP fares against its main competitors in 25-27K range. I’ll give my ratings for Xperia SP in the end.
*Not considering Nexus 4 due to limited storage & weak battery.

——– Xperia SP vs Galaxy S3 vs HTC One X/X+ ———

    1. Design: I just can’t accept the design of S3. Few may like it, but most of you will agree with me. X is the best in looks with SP a close 2nd.

    2. Ergonomics & Build: SP is the thickest & heaviest of the lot, but it is shortest in length & width making it easier to handle. The difference in size is significant between S3 & SP. In fact S3 is bigger than S4. Build quality for all three is very good.

    3. Hardware: SP has the best processor & GPU & beats the other 2 hands down in benchmarks, gaming & web browsing etc. RAM is same for all. SP???s inbuilt memory is only 8 GB (5.3 GB user accessible).

    4. Screen: All 3 have same resolution & great indoor performance. S3’s super amoled & X’s LCD2 easily beat SP in outdoors.

    5. Camera: All 3 have 8 MP and decent “good light” performance. S3 is a clear winner due to better low light performance. SP is the worse in low lights which probably is due to bad software. Future updates might correct it. SP’s front camera is VGA.

    6. Software: SP comes with Jelly Bean whereas the other two were launched 1 year ago with Ice-cream Sandwich & are about to receive Jelly Bean. Nobody knows if X & S3 will get Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. SP will surely get it as Sony is better in providing upgrades.

    7. Battery: The most neglected aspect of a smartphone. SP outperforms both. Once you turn stamina mode on, it does even better. S3’s battery is removable – a slight advantage. Check out the battery tests for all 3 on GSMarena.

    8. Price: SP can be bought for about 23K outside whereas S3 will be around 27K, X+ about 29K. I am only listing X+ here as the Flipkart price for X (32 GB) is much higher than X+ (64 GB) which is stupidity. X (16 GB, no expandable storage) is not worth considering.
    ——–

    I chose Xperia SP coz:

    1. Design: The transparent LED makes the Xperia SP a real looker. Silver power button also adds to beauty. There are little gaps between the phone & back cover on few places, reducing a point.
    9/10

    2. Ergonomics & Build: The aluminium frame enhances the build & the rubburized plastic back cover improves the handling. On the front, the edges are a bit sharp for a phone reducing points.
    8/10

    3. Hardware: Xperia SP has the latest S4 processor & Adreno 320 GPU. The GPU is same as Xperia Z/ZL & HTC One & is the best in current mobiles. Resource hog games like Asphalt 7, Dead Trigger, Real Racing, GTA Vice City etc. work like a charm on SP. You can look up videos on youtube for it. Also, if you own a PS3 you can use its controller to play games on Xperia SP too. If you want to have too many big games on your phone at once, internal memory might be short.
    9/10

    4. Screen: Sp has really sharp 1280 * 720 p (HD) screen. Bright enough for indoors. However, in outdoors, the reflections from the screen are annoying. Viewing angles, though not as good as the other 2, still are good enough for a mobile which one mainly uses face on & not while keeping it tilted.
    8/10.

    5. Camera: Xperia SP gets the least points here due to all I wrote above. However SP takes nice pics in good lights & for low light condition like parties, better to use a digicam. Even Lumia 920’s camera won???t excel in dark. The front VGA camera might be a helpful in reducing your 3G data charges due to low resolution.
    7/10

    6. Software: Jelly Bean is very sweet. Sony also has gone for the minimalist approach, which benefits SP’s performance. For other apps the great Google Play is not far away.
    10/10

    7. Battery: The standby time of SP is not as good as its talktime, web browsing or video playback times, which are simply great. Also as the phone is 10 mm thick & the battery is non removable, a larger battery like 2600-2800 mAh would have been nice.
    8.5/10

    8. Price: 10/10

    ———

Sony has delivered a masterpiece with Xperia SP. I am giving it 4 stars only due to 8 GB internal memory, bad main camera & VGA front camera. If any 2 out of these 3 aspects were better, I would have given 5 stars. If you are more into gaming, web browsing, watching movies on your phone then go for it.

If you want a large collection of heavy HD games, give S3 or One X+ another thought. This is because Android 4.0 onward u can???t move the apps to SD card. Here Xperia SP’s limited inbuilt storage might be a problem. Though you can always keep the songs, movies & default storage of camera on your SD card.

If camera is your ultimate goal then forget it, buy a cheap phone & get a nice digicam.

If you can stretch your budget to 30K, get Xperia ZR. It is water & dust poof, has 13MP, better processor & 2 GB RAM. If budget is about 20K, go for Xperia L.

CHECK XPERIA BLOG FOR FAVOURITE XPERIA PHONE
Just Google, “vote for favourite xperia phone xperia blog”(Due to restrictions from flipkart i cannot post the link)
XPERIA SP IS LEADING THE FLAGSHIP XPERIA Z1 BY 10%, ITS TOO UNUSUAL FOR A MIDRANGE PHONE TO BE AT TOP!!!!!

    Flipkart:
I placed the order for this product with some other accesories on 10th of october and got it at my doorstep on 12th october, so pretty good service from flipkart.

    Product:
Truly speaking, i decided to buy this product after hundreds of review and comparisons, and there was no match for this phone from any other branded phone at this price.

    Let’s get in detail stepwise

    Performance:
featuring a qualcomm snapdragon S4 Pro chipset with 1.7 dual core krait cpu coupled with adreno 320 graphics is just fabulous
This is the major plus point of this phone, because these are the best configurations giving outstanding performance, and let me tell you the truth, don’t just look the no. of cores in the mobile, the type of processor matters a lot and as it is in this case, being a dual core, it is better than most of the other quad cores(Example of Note 2 Below) and being clocked at 1.7 gigs adds more power to it.
    Antutu benchmarks
    New version of antutu: 20500 (Note 2 – 20200)
    Old version of antutu: 16000 (Note 2 – 15000)
    Quadrant Benchmarks
    8000 ( Note 2 – 6000)

    Built:
    Nicely Built
    Better than plasticky samsung phones

    Appearance:
Amazing, moreover, the transparent notification led adds more charm to it.

    Display:
Heard many complaints from users that sony has limited viewing angles, but getting one sony phone in hand really tells the true story, the screen is much clear and crispt to look upto an angle of 50 degree, and why would anyone move beyond it.
Display quality is also very good, crystal clear as it has a resolution of 720*1280 pixels, screan looks very sharp

    Camera:
8MP is available in normal mode, while using hdr it is cut shot to 7MP
Nevertheless images are okay, not too poor and not too miraculous.

    Battery:
Outstanding, there’s pretty much of juice left even after a day with occasional gaming, music, videos and surfing

Lets put everything in a nutshell

    Pros;
    Outstanding performance
    Sharp Display (720*1280p)
    Good Battery Backup
    Transparent LED Notifications

    Cons:
Little less ram although its 1gb, usable is 766mb, nevertheless its okay for normal use.
    Front cam vga
Non-removable Battery (Not a big issue though)
On screen buttons eat up some space of the screen, the screen is 4.6 inch but excluding the on screen buttons, just 4.3 inches remains, although the whole screen is usable when viewing videos.

    Flaws:
Yes, SOME xperia sp’s have minor flaws, my phone has these flaws

    1) Horizontal touch problem – Sometimes the touch doesn’t work when the phone is kept horizontal on any surface ( its very rare, one in every 20 touches doesn’t work)

    2) Dark Screen – Sometimes when you switch on the screen, the screen goes black, solution is just to relock and unlock the screen.

    3) Surprisingly my sim didn’t work in this mobile but it works in another moble, i have to take a new sim card for this new mobile

    4) The phone restarts itself when it gets overloaded (ITS TOO RARE i experienced this twice in 13 days)

Let me tell you that only some of xperia devices have these minor bugs, and moreover the are very very rare, and we can except these bugs to be solved in future update of android 4.3 which is about to release for this device….

Now show me a phone having this performance at this price tag….

I have been using this phone for 3 days & I have been quite satisfied with what i got.

The size of the phone is perfect (4.6 inches screen) which is pretty comfortable to hold without feeling awkward unlike those 5 inchers!

Phone is a bit on the heavy side, but i personally like the weighty feel of it.

Many people are complaining about the lcd display. I didnt find any issue with that. The screen has a vivid display enhanced by the bravia 2 engine…& the viewing angles are not as bad as some people are claiming it to be. people dont hold their phone in awkward angles while looking at it. Even if you do…you’ll notice that viewing angle is decent enough. And the screen has 720p HD display…again that is pretty sweet

I didnt do much sound tesst of the speaker. The speaker sounds loud when ringtones are being played….but it sounds average with the mp3’s. It could have been the mp3 i was plaaying since the speaker showed it could go loud enough with the ringtones.

I didnt see the phone hang anywhere thanks to its powerful 1.7ghz dual core cpu & adreno 320 gpu. This phone beats Galaxy S3 in benchmarks, just Google it if you dont believe me!

If i was dissapointed with something…its the camera quality.
If you are buying this phone for taking lots of photos you should reconsider.
The pictures are over saturated & has lots of graininess & noise.
Also the phone is capable of taking only upto 7mp photo…even though the phone supports an 8 mp camera.
I hope sony fixes this with a firmware update if they can cause it looks like false advertising from sony as of now!

Another firmware bug that i found was…you are not able to move the brightness slider if Adaptive Brightness is turned on. Turning off AB, changing brightness and then turning AB back on did have an effect. So i dont know why it couldnt be changed with AB turned on. Again, a firmware update could fix this.

Here is a short summary of the phone:

    PROS:
-comes with 4g/LTE support (i think it is one of the cheapest phone with 4g/LTE support as of now)
-beautiful 720p HD screen (319 ppi pixel density).
-Powerful Hardware (1.7 ghz dual core cpu & adreno 320 gpu)
    -Decent Battery backup (2370 mAh)
    -microSD card slot is available

    CONS:
    -poor camera Quality
-minor bugs here n there (which can be fixed with Update)

The phone was bought a few months ago and the phone WILL give you problems, even though there are a lot of good things about it. But for the price the customer pays, it is something that cannot be let go, because money does not sprout from seeds!
And if a customer is investing into a company that is “supposed to be” trustworthy, well you will be disappointed because cheaper phones than this, with more phone-usage scope are better. However, these are the issues with my phone only. I will note problems of other friends too, wherever necessary.

    Pros:
Works seamlessly. Yes, it does but only after a system update. If no update has been done, you’re in for a frustrating experience.

Camera goes average somehow. (No scratches on mine)

    Charging is still quickly done.

Can handle multiple apps, provided they are small, less consumptive apps. I do not have huge apps installed so cannot criticise this issue.

For any problem, you can shut down.

    Cons:
    1. Heats up. None of my apps are heavy, nor do I abuse the phone by gnawing on FB or whatsapp like many people I’ve seen, hence a surprise.
    2. Drains too quickly. (I am not a gamer or a social networker, and I do not have any app more than 25mb installed. Only one game of ‘8ball’ which is 34 mb. 100% battery will drain to 30% in 45mins only! I’m not an expert but I do not think this should happen)
    3. Sound output will definitely go bad. (My friend has also experienced the same)
    4. Call volumes go down too.
    5. Over sensitive touch: My fingers will only hover over the screen but apps open up due to oversensitivity. This can be resolved by restarting the phone but you are not buying a phone to restart it everyday!
    6. Too many pre-installed worthless company apps that you just cannot get rid of! (My phone has 48/65 apps preinstalled!!!)
    7. The screen may not get the scratches, but the body will easily bear scars. It is like it looks for adventure!
    8. Does not easily connect via USB. My Nokia Classic C-1 connects faster. It is nearly 7 years old!
    9. Lag while unlocking screen after you put it to sleep. (You know what I mean, like when you press the side button and slide)
    10. I saved the worst for last: This phone will shut down without reason. You will not be able to even use it or restart it. You can check it has happened all over the internet too. This is the biggest and worst drawback for a phone someone pays so much and for what? To deserve a shut down!

I will rate it only 2 stars. And suggest to look up the internet before buying this. And take into consideration, many users post the review after like one or two days only. Nothing about a phone’s future functionality can be determined before a month of usage.

Note: I speak from observation and experience. I am not a bright tech person but I hope the more intellectual ones will understand. Have a good time, guys.

I’ve been using the phone for almost a week now. I bought it for 22k from HS18.

The phone is a beauty to behold. The metallic power button gives it a classy feel that no Sammy phone can provide. The camera and the volume buttons feel nice and sturdy. The headphone port is located on the top and did support my Nokia earplugs. The back of the phone is made of plastic but feels premium nonetheless. Pulling the cover out reveals the ports for the microSD and microSIM cards. The battery is non removable though.

Speaking of battery, you needn’t worry even a bit in this department. I’ve been abusing the capabilities of the phone for 4-5 days now and everytime it happily recieves the abuse for a whole day. You wouldn’t fuss over the battery, period.

Coming to the performance, it is simply amazing. The navigation around the UI is buttery smooth, even if the phone is loaded with 10-15 open apps, including heavy games like World of Goo and Subway Surfers. All heavy games and apps function perfectly. The 1GB RAM allows you to multitask fairly easily. Only on rare occassions did I notice the RAM filling up.

The sceen is fantastic to look at. It’s an HD display which means that viewing HD videos on it is an enjoyable experience. However the viewing angles aren’t that great and the colors start dimming as soon the screen is tilted. But I guess it should only be a problem in scenarious wherein you mean to show someone your screen. For personal use, it is absolutely fine. The Mobile Bravia Engine 2 enhances the color saturation to make the images and video really pop out. But sometimes I feel that the phone overdoes it, especially when it comes to reds and pinks. There is however, an option to turn the engine of in the setting. Another nicety is the glove mode, which allows you to register a touch by simply hovering your finger over the screen about less than a cm. Useful when you are wearing gloves or hands are dirty. One drawback I’ve experienced with the phone is that when placed on a surface, it sometimes won’t register a touch unless you touch the metal frame around the phone with another finger, or connect the charger. The solution to this is using the glove mode when the phone is kept on a table. It is a pain to switch it back off but I’m sure Sony will resolve this issue with a siftware update.

Coming to the camera performance, it kinda has let me down. Many a times, focusing is a problem. You touch an area on the screen and the camera still focuses someplace else. But when you do get a focus, the photo comes out pretty fine, but only if there is ample lighting around. Any photo shot in broad sunlight gives you amazing result. But if you’re inside, you will have to fiddle with the settings a bit to get an agreeable result. The 8MP shooter actually shoots at 7MP max with 4:3 ratio. But I like to keep it down to 5MP which produces a 16:9 output along with the keeping the file size down. The camera is able to zoom in quite close to objects so macros shouldn’t be a problem. However, you would not like to press the zoom button as it would depress you. The camera software gives you several filters to chose from just like in Instagram. Overall the camera gives satisfactory performance but left me wanting something more from a company famed for it’s digicams. The front camera is horribly disappointing. Just a VGA. I don’t wanna talk about it.

The cover provided with the phone doesn’t justify it’s 2000 price tag. However I don’t mind it taking care of my phone all the time, even and especially when I’m out with my friends. The cover has holes and cuts for all the ports. Even the notification LED is slightly visible in the dark with the phone covered.

Talking of the notificaion LED, I consider it the USP of this phone. Sure there are plenty other phones out there that provide the same performance and camera capabilities but no other phone gives you this. It adds real class and value to the phone. Other than just making the phone pretty, it serves important function as well. You can tweak it to display different colors for different types of contacts and alerts.

The call quality, speaker, signal reception, user interface don’t give any trouble. Overall I am very happy with the phone and would strongly recommend it to everyone with a mid size budget. The only disappointment remains that only today, I found out that HS18 is giving it away for 21700 when I bought it for 22000 just a few days back. I guess there are somethings out of your control :/

I bought this phone yesterday from a local store and i’m very impressed by it. No doubt it’s the best phone at this range. It’s a beast ! beats the hell out of the S3 like it’s nothing. People might say that S3 is better because it’s a quad core. Well guess what you could google it if you want to a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro Dual Core processor is way above the Exynos Quad Core and if you need more proof, the phone’s scores in Antutu is 16486 , Quadrant is 7584 and Nenamark is 59.9 FPS . Scores which the S3 couldn’t even dream of. And it even packs the monster Adreno 320 GPU, the same one used in Xperia Z & ZL. Battery backup is really good indeed. Lasts a whole day with moderate usage like gaming , watching videos and listening to music and also with the internet switched on the whole time. The LED strip on the bottom is indeed an attraction. Don’t hesitate ! Just go for it.

So I have been using this phone for almost 2 weeks now, sufficient time to see the good and bad things about a phone.

Lets not talk about the specifications, everyone knows about them.

    Pros:
    – handy phone
    – pretty fluid in use
    – camera speed better than previous xperia phones (dont know about arc)
    – good sound quality with decent headphones
    – basic telephony is flawless

    Cons:
    – supplied headphone sucks
    – not a point and shoot camera replacement
    – charger cable length way too small
    – takes almost 3 hours to fully charge with the supplied charger (low charger output + big battery)

Phone is lag free till now, though browsing with chrome eats up ram, that makes the home to reload. otherwise the experience is butter smooth, and there is always an option to use any other browser of your own choice.

Gaming experience is nice as was expected (played real racing 3, asphalt 7, temple run 2 etc.)

Camera quality is usable, after all i am not really interested in getting print outs of those pics, i have my camera for that.

Voice quality is pretty good, i haven’t faced any problem with low voice or non consistent voice as many ppl have said.

Speaker volume is on the lower side but clear (as compared to nokia lumia 620)

Display quality is awesome until n unless you start comparing it with some SLCD or AMOLED screen, whites tend to look yellowish then.

Sometimes the touch screen doesn’t work, when phone is kept horizontally, but after locking then unlocking again that problem gets solved, which is irritating though, don’t know if it is a software problem or hardware problem.

Glove mode (you can always switch it off) is a pain sometimes, as many times I have found random windows open in my phone when kept in pocket after ending a call (ie keeping the phone with cover without locking it manually)

Although the battery is huge, still have to charge it daily (with nominal talking, full day internet on, approx one hr gaming, auto brightness on), as in by night the battery is down to 10-15%, still better than many phones. (WITHOUT USING THAT STAMINA MODE)

    Free cover is fine too.

could have bought it for 2k lesser from the local store, but cz of my sheer laziness purchased it from here only. Flipkart’s delivery timings are definitely awesome 🙂

Quite satisfied with this phone, no plan of changing it for the next two years atleast
