Smartphone industry is showing great interest in foldable smartphone from few months. Apple and LG are already working on foldable smartphones and they filed several patents regarding that. Samsung Electronics also patented this technology and looks like that they will be first to launch it in the market as a support page was added on official South Korean website of company for Samsung Galaxy X – allegedly first foldable smartphone from the house of Samsung. This newest development confirms that launch of the device is not so far and can go live in 2018 itself. Samsung also launched it’s first flip smartphone W2018 in china last week and looks like company wants to be ahead in every race.

Earlier in September, Ko Dong-jin, president of Samsung’s IM Division said, “We aim to launch a foldable smartphone next year.” Just after that rivals started working on foldable smartphones. Samsung has developed a panel with curvature of 1.0R that can be folded just like we fold paper, says sources. Experts are not getting into a final conclusion about the material that will be used to make foldable screens and their opinions are divided. Major opinion that emerge here is that companies are going to use plastic material for such screens.
LG and Apple are already working hard to release foldable smartphone very soon. LG display is all set to synthesize a display with curvature 2.5R by the end of this year and expected to develop a foldable panel of 1.0R curvature by the end of 2019. On the other hand, Apple also filed few patents regarding foldable displays and they released a foldable iPhone image in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on November 23 (local time). LG display might supply these foldable displays to Apple. Company has also formed a Special Task Force Team to work on this and expected to release foldable iPhone by the end of year 2020.
Samsung has speed up it’s process to launch Samsung Galaxy X (a-fore-said foldable smartphone) by the year 2018 looking at latest patents filed by Apple and LG display. It will be interesting to see how many technology patents as filed by Samsung regarding this foldable screen will actually comes into force in the final product i.e. Galaxy X. Other suspense will unfold by the launch of the smartphone.
