Technology needs advancements to keep on rolling. In smartphone innovations over the years, we have seen several changes like 2016 was dedicated to bring dual camera setup on mid-budget smartphone. In the same way, 2017 was fully dedicated to bezel-less screens on smartphones. Samsung hinted out at bezel-less display on Galaxy S6 Edge. However, full fledged wider screen bezel-less display was seen on Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. The bezel-free display was innovated in 2017 and was meant for flagship smartphones but things changed when Micromax Canvas Infinity boarded the narrow bezels and it is device that stands in lower price segment.
After that, many mobile phone makers took up the technology gracefully and implemented it into their devices. Now the question arises, what is special in 18:9 aspect ratio display?
What does Bezel-Less 18:9 display mean?
First of all aspect ratio should not be conglomerated with screen sizes on a smartphone, they are very much different. Screen size is the diagonal length of screen. The screen size of mobiles are generally published in inches. Suppose, specifications of a mobile says 4-inch screen that means it is length measurement from the bottom left corner to the top right corner (as shown in the image).
This is how screen size of a mobile phone is measured.
Now, aspect ratio is the ratio of width to height or vice versa of a screen calculated in landscape mode. Aspect ratio does not include the strips of metal or plastic on sides on display. For an x:y aspect ratio, no matter how big or small the image is, if the width is divided into x units of equal length and the height is measured using this same length unit, the height will be measured to be y units. Aspect ratio is basically the relationship between height and width regardless of units of dimensions (such as yards, meter, centimeters etc.).
Traditionally, smartphones featured 16:9 aspect ratio which means ratio of their two sides is 16:9. In 2017, at Mobile World Congress a new aspect ratio of 18:9 was unveiled and thereafter, mobile companies took it to implement to their devices and several smartphones are presented featuring 18:9 aspect ratio displays.
Fitting both 16:9 and 18:9 ratio in same screen size. Trimming the bezels generates extra space that can be used for display.
18:9 aspect ratio helps in overcome difficulties such as fitting of large display smartphones in your hand. Many of the customers loves larger screens and screens up to 5.5-inch size are easy to hold in hand but bigger than that does not fit perfectly in your hands. So, 18:9 aspect ratio displays helps in sporting bigger screen sizes up to 6-inches within same compact frame. The aspect ratio of a display is always measured in landscape mode. 18:9 aspect ratio basically means 2:1, which means width of the smartphone is twice the height. Important point here is that, no change in form factor is needed while implementing larger aspect displays.
What is basically do is get rid of thick bezels on each top, bottom and sides. When these thick bezels are removed, more space is available that can be used to show larger display without changing the form factor. Other related terms to 18:9 aspect ratio includes bezel-less, bezel-free, edge-to-edge display, Full View display etc. In simpler terms, a taller display is fitted into compact frame.
Also make a note that, 18:9 aspect ratio does not always mean larger displays, it can be provided on 5-inch or 5.2-inch screen size phones by narrowing bezels.
